Get Involved
By joining the GAVRT team, you will:
- Attend a 5-day training course where you will learn the basics of radio astronomy, are taught how to control the telescope, and are provided guidance for use of the program curriculum.
- Work with fellow participants and professional scientists globally to uncover new knowledge about the universe.
- Remotely control a 34-meter, 500-ton, radio telescope from your personal computer.
- Access curricula are aligned with the A Framework for K-12 Science and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
- Receive ongoing support and answers to questions via interactive website, email, and phone communication.
- Receive support from LCER and JPL throughout the entire process.
- Contribute to the scientific body of knowledge.
For Educators, Students, and Citizen Scientists
Whether you want to bring radio astronomy to the students in your classroom or you are a solo traveler interested in exploring space, the Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) Program offers involvement options for all. NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Lewis Center for Educational Research invite all educators, students, and individuals interested in radio astronomy to join us for the GAVRT project. Through GAVRT, participants operate a 34-meter radio telescope remotely, collecting data on radio sources, including planets such as Jupiter, distant astronomical objects such as black holes, the Sun, and the search for intelligent life beyond Earth.
Additional opportunities include partnerships with NASA flight missions and work on GAVRT's SETI Campaign. Students have the opportunity to work with NASA radio astronomy research professionals to plan scientific experiments, conduct observations, and analyze data.
This exciting institute will train participants in all aspects of the GAVRT Program, including radio astronomy, support curriculum, and antenna operations.
ONLINE TRAINING
GAVRT offers a free online training option to get your students involved in the GAVRT Radio Astronomy Project as soon as possible. Many teachers or facilitators take online training and then attend one of our in-person trainings to meet the team and ask our panel of scientists questions they've accumulated during the year.
Please email Mission Control at mc@lcer.org or call 760-946-5414 ext. 270 to sign up for Online Training.
