Get Involved with Solar Patrol

For Educators and Students

Imagine the excitement in your classroom as students conduct their own solar observations, analyze live data, and contribute to scientific research. This program not only fosters an exciting learning environment but also inspires the next generation of scientists.

Solar Patrol offers students and educators the opportunity to engage in real scientific research. Participants will learn how to conduct raster scans, analyze solar data, and understand solar implications. This hands-on experience brings abstract scientific concepts to life, fostering a deeper appreciation for space science.

  • Educational Modules: We provide comprehensive training materials and lesson plans to help educators integrate Solar Patrol into their curriculum.
  • Live Operation: Students participate in live sessions, where they can operate the DSS-28 antenna remotely and analyze the data.
  • Project-Based Learning: Students can undertake projects based on their observations, encouraging critical thinking and scientific reasoning.

For Citizen Scientists

Imagine being part of a network of citizen scientists, each making valuable contributions to our understanding of the Sun. Your participation can help improve our understanding of space weather and contribute to the scientific body of knowledge on the Sun.

Citizen scientists play a crucial role in Solar Patrol. By participating, you will help collect and analyze solar data, contributing to ongoing research efforts. This initiative is a unique chance to work alongside professional scientists and make meaningful contributions to our understanding of the Sun.

  • Training and Resources: Access detailed guides on how to conduct observations and analyze data.
  • Collaborative Research: Join a community, share your findings, and contribute to research projects.
  • Contribute to Science: Your observations and analyses will be used in real scientific studies, advancing our knowledge of solar phenomena.

Online Training:

To begin exploring the Sun, take the first step and email Mission Control at mc@lcer.org or call 760-946-5414 ext. 270 to sign up for online training.

Join the Solar Patrol Campaign today and participate in the mission to uncover the mysteries of our Sun!

Once we receive your interest, you will complete our training course to learn how to operate the DSS-28 telescope and analyze data. Then, it's time for takeoff: you will begin conducting your own observations of the Sun!
