Campaign Goals

Juno_SpacecraftEngage students in authentic science by comparing the data they have gathered with data gathered by the Juno Spacecraft orbiting Jupiter.  Involve teachers and students in the process of collecting and analyzing the data prior to sending it to NASA Scientists for review. These data will be used to improve our understanding of how Jupiter was formed and how that is related to the formation of the solar system. 

The primary goals for Jupiter Quest are to: 
  • Science: Improve our understanding of the high-energy electrons in Jupiter's radiation belts.
  • Science: Contribute GAVRT data to help in the broader understanding of the formation of the solar system.
  • Science: Contribute GAVRT ground-based data to the Juno MIssion for comparison of data collected at Jupiter.
  • Education: Teach students how to collect data on synchrotron radiation (high-energy electrons) and to develop a better understanding of the electromagnetic field. 
  • Education/Citizen Science: Teach students how to examine and report relevant data to scientists for follow up.

Jupiter

Monitor the total synchrotron emission from Jupiter on timescales ranging from days to years, which helps us understand high-energy electrons in Jupiter's radiation belts.  GAVRT data provide context for Juno microwave radiometer measurements, VLA observations, and observations with larger dishes, all of which show more detail but are less frequent than GAVRT observations.
